Royal Launer Rooftop Party

Simon Green

An invitation to The Royal Launer 2018 event was indeed an honour to receive. This took place at the new Hyatt Regency hotel, on the rooftop bar which affords magnificent views across much of Moscow. We were treated to an epicurian evening, courtesy of Royal Launer, a royal warrant holder and the Queen’s leather goods manufacturer. Other sponsors came in the guise of the newly opened Brookes School, The British Business Club, Conner and Company, Moet Hennessy, Davidoff Cigars and last, but definitely not least, Astrakhan Caviar. About 120 people attended. Some of us lugubriously wolfed down generous helpings of this ultra-fine food with the aid of a chilled silver tea spoon.

We started with the quintessential English afternoon tea which was accompanied with various sandwiches and delicious fresh fruit to befit the occasion. I afforded myself a wry smile as not much tea was in evidence, and when I asked the presiding President of this esteemed event, Luke Conner, and the Headmaster of the aforementioned school, Charley King, about the whereabouts of the liquid refreshments, (tea was actually on my mind at this juncture!) they merely pointed me in the direction of the bar where copious amounts of Moet were being dispersed ad infinitum—this was akin to waving a red flag to a bull!

An auction and raffle followed with proceeds going to the Taganka Children’s charity, and by then, generous portions of Chianti and Glenmorangie were in full flow – I could have died and gone to heaven. The staff of the hotel were quite wonderful and more hot food followed hard on the heels of a spectacular array of sushi, with glorious wafts of garlic to entice us into indulging. The food supplies appeared to be endless, as were the drinks, which is always a sign of a mega-successful party; and this one carried on well into the small hours. The usual suspects were in attendance along with a plethora of new people to meet, and these ingredients made for an unforgettable evening among Moscow’s high society!
