1812 Weekend in Vyazma September 22-23

Free eventNew 1812 festival in Vyazma – well past their 200thanniversaries, Napoleonic battle reenactments and the era itself are still extremely relevant, says one of the Vyazma festival organizers, Stanislav Khamidov of Moscow’s 4thGreat Army Hussar Regiment.

Organized by 4th Hussar Regiment of the Great Army, Vyazma municipal education administration, LLC “Semlevo” and national cultural centre “Mat Zemlya”, the festival will take place on Saturday 22/09 and Sunday 23/09.

“The actual battle happened November 3, but we decided to do it earlier to catch some good weather,” – he explains.

This is very likely to happen, with a forecast of +24C (partly cloudy) on Saturday and +20C and occasional drizzle on Sunday.

Vyazmais only roughly a 2 hour drive/train or bus drive from Moscow, with trains running from the Belorusskiy train station.

Canons and cavalry in the Main City Square

Saturday 22/09 – 12:00 – 17:00 Vyazma city center (Sovietskaya Square).

Festival opening, parade of participating reenactment clubs from Russia, Belarus and Latvia.

Battle reenactment.

“We’re not sure if the window-panes in the surrounding houses will survive this experiment,” – Stanislav continues with a laugh. “But we have the permission to try this year.”

I like the idea: on Saturday September 22 the battle and market will take place in Sovietskaya square in the heart of the city Vyazma, conveniently accessible both from the motorway and the train station, near most of the city’s monuments, History museum, the Trinity Cathedral, practical things like cafes and supermarkets, and a couple of hotels where some of the participants and guests will be staying.

For the more adventurous, there’s a field battle on Sunday in the village of Kolodeznoye.

Over 200 reenactors, 60 riders, artillery, pyrotechnics.  A beautiful two-day reenactment of the 1812 Vyazma battle.

Market and street food (by Mary’s Catering, “Dear Ivanych Tea Room” and others). Kids friendly, with different sorts of games and activities.

* On Saturday evening you can drive/take a festival bus/ to the village of Kolodeznoye(32 km from Vyazma) to see the reenactment camp and fireworks.

Sunday 23/09 Kolodeznoye – battle reenactment.

Festival ends 23/09 17:00.
